1.The storm was raging (выбор времени: в то время как шторм бушевал всю ночь - Past Continuous - длительное действие) the whole night, and the sailors were trying (выбор времени: моряки старались сделать все возможное -   Past Continuous - длительное действие) to do their best to save the ship.

 

2.Make's friends could hardly recognize him as he had  changed greatly after his expedition to the Antarctic. - Past Perfect потому что - результат налицо, он так изменился, что его невозможно было узнать)

 

3.When I entered (просто вошел - Past Simple) the hall, the students were  listening (слушали (в тот момент как он вошел -  Past Continuous - длительное действие) to a very interesting lecture in history.
