Present-day Kazaknstan faces a few ecological problems, such as radiation pollution, the shrinking of the Aral Sea, desertification of former agricultural land, air and water pollution.

The most serious issue is radioactive contamination because of the nuclear testing at the Semipalatinsk testing facility. As a result, many people have developed cancer and an increased number of children are being born with birth defects.

Another big issue is that most of Kazakhstan’s water supply is polluted by industrial and agricultural runoff and, in some places, radioactivity. The Aral Sea has shrunk to three separate bodies of water. The reduction in the Aral Sea’s water surface has brought climate change and agricultural soil has been damaged by salt deposits and eroded by wind. Plants in industrial centres pollute air and water.

But the good news is that now there are ecological organizations and ecological movements in the country that are involved in creating environmental laws and monitor their implementation.
