A Strange Habit
Balzac was a famous French writer of great talent. But he had a strange habit: he liked to tell a person's character by his or her handwriting. He was very proud of his ability, and he often boasted of it among his friend.
One day his friend brought him an exercise book and said:" My dear friend, I want to know what you think of this boy's character. Don't be afraid again to tell me the truth, he is not my son."
Balzac was very glad to demonstrate his ability again and began studying the handwriting. After some minutes of hard work he said:" All right, I'll tell you the truth. The boy is a bad and lazy fellow."
"It is very strange," said his friend and smiled. "This is a page from your own exercise book, which you used when you were a boy.

Бальзак был знаменитым французским писателем большого таланта. Но у него была странная привычка - он любил определять характер человека по почерку. Он гордился этой способностью и часто хвастался ею среди друзей.
Однажды его друг принёс ему ученическую тетрадь и сказал: "Мой дорогой друг, я хочу знать, что Вы думаете о характера этого мальчика. Не бойтесь рассказать мне правду, это не мой сын".
Бальзак обрадовался возможности опять продемонстрировать свои способности и принялся изучать почерк. Через несколько минут напряжённого труда он сказал: "Ладно, я скажу тебе правду. Этот мальчик - плохой и ленивый".
"Очень странно, - сказал его друг и улыбнулся, - Это страница из твоей собственной тетради, в которой ты писал, когда был ребёнком".
