“How much (to want) you for it?” (to ask) Mr. Wallis. “It’s not expensive. Five hundred pounds only,”(to be) the reply.

So Mr. Wallis (to have) to sign a cheque for Ј 500 and the man (to give) him the cat.

Mr. Wallis (to leave) the shop and a little later (to come back).

“I (to bring) a white cat. You (to buy) it?” (to smile) Mr. Wallis. “ It is one of the lovely kittens of the white cat that you (to sell) me several years ago. I (to advise) you to buy it.” The man understood everything. He (to tell) Mr. Wallis that he (to pay) him for the cat if Mr. Wallis (not to tell) the police about it and if he never (to come) to the shop again.

“ How much (to cost) it now?” he (to ask). “ Seven hundred pounds,” (to answer) Mr. Wallis, “because I (to want) to get some interest on my money.”
