Sometimes our school holds working Saturdays. It means that we have community service days or days of voluntary work. On such days we don’t have lessons. Instead we work at the schoolyard. My classmates don’t like such pastime much, but I do. We should wear some casual clothes, for example, a T-shirt and jeans. Then, we are supposed to clean the surrounding area and to take care of the plants. Once we have even planted some birch trees. It was an interesting experience. There are several reasons why I find such events useful. First of all, it unites school children, while they are doing a collective activity. Secondly, it’s an additional physical exercise. And, thirdly, it keeps students busy. Many teens at their free time develop bad habits, such as smoking or drinking alcohol. Instead they should take part in working Saturdays. The habit of arranging the days of voluntary work originated in the former Soviet Union. However, it is also popular in the culture of various countries. For example, the days of community service are regularly held in the USA. Polish people have at least one working Saturday per month. It has been noted that Saturdays are days of low productivity. Most people are tired after the hectic work week. So, such working days were mainly supposed to unite people through corporate team building activities. By the way, working Saturdays are not only for school children. Even my parents sometimes participate in such events.
