В некоторых сочетаниях используются фиксированные предлоги:

оn duty - дежурный, ответственный;
on foot ­ пешком;
by heart - наизусть;
in pencil - карандашом.

предлогов много в анг языке например in at on under и тд их надо зубрить и надо практиковать а союзов не так много их можно запомнить.
