Columbus was the first of the reliably known travelers to cross the Atlantic Ocean in the subtropical and tropical strip of the northern hemisphere and the first of the Europeans to sail in the Caribbean Sea and in the Sargasso Sea[2][an unauthorized source?]. He discovered and initiated the exploration of South and Central America, including their continental parts and nearby archipelagos - the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and Puerto Rico), the Lesser Antilles (from Dominica to the Virgin Islands, as well as Trinidad) and the Bahamas.
