This is a huge issue I have with texting. 

I am a millennial and I am like your friend.  I respond to text messages at my own leisure, if I even respond at all.  I do not carry my phone around with me all the time, sometimes when I check the alerts I cannot respond to the message, then it becomes an out of site out of mind sort of situation. 

How long does it take for you to respond to an email?  How is texting any different?

Do my friends care that I do not respond, or if I do it might take forever?  No, and why should they?  My friends know, if they really want to get a hold of me to call me on the phone.  I much prefer spending time with people face-to-face than online or over im/text.  My phone is for my convenience, not everyone else's.

Hopefully, this sheds some light on your friends potential mentality about this.  Do not feel slighted because someone does not like texting.  People are busy, some people enjoy focusing on what is in front of them over what is miles away.  Pay attention to how they treat you in person and how they behave around you.  That is the true sign of how good they are as a friend.
