"Был холодный февральский день 1890 года. Параход "Лавиния" шел из Нью-Йорка в Лондон. Дамы элегантных полатьях и мужчины в шикарных фраках гуляли по палубе, ожидая прибытия в порт. Одна из леди - Тэсса Карстэйрс - читала толстую книгу, то и дело откидывая назад свои прекрасные русые волосы. Наконец, резкий гудок оповестил пассажиров о прибытии в порт. Тэсса вместе с остальными сошла на берег.
Наняв кеб и доехав до постоялого двора, девушка поднялась в снятую для нее небольшую комнату. Уютные, но старые занавески, маленький столик, кровать и полка с книгами - вот все, что она увидела. Сняв белоснежные перчатки и немного отдохнув, Тэсса взяла с полки старинную книгу в кожаном переплете. Начав ее читать, девушка изменилась в лице, и до утра не выпускала книгу из рук. Дочитав, Тэсса накинула на плечи бархатный плащ, взяла в руки кружевной зонтик и, попрощавшись с хозяйкой дома, вышла на улицу. Прошел час, два, но девушка так и не возвращалась...
