Surfing is a high risk sport, and sharks are not actually the
main danger. Sharks are a common feature of Australian
waters but fatal attacks are rare. Rips put inexperienced
surfers at much greater risk. They are the cause of most
tragedies at beaches.
A rip, or a rip current, is a strong current running out to sea.
It forms not far from the shore. It's difficult to notice when a rip
comes. It drags everything from the beach to sea. Rips are very
dangerous as they can carry a weak or tired swimmer out into
deep water.
To avoid or survive rip currents, surfers and swimmers
should use only life guide protected beaches. They should never
swim or surf alone. They should never enter the surf in places
where swimming is prohibited. Sport is a great way to escape
the stress of modern day living, but it can cause trouble if
people are careless.
