anne Kathleen Rowling was born on July 31st, 1965 in Yate, near Bristol, England. Rowling's writing career started at the age of six when she wrote a story called "Rabbit". Rowling graduated from the University of Exeter in 1986 and in the early 1990s she went to Portugal to work as a teacher of English. After a brief marriage and the birth of her daughter she returned to the United Kingdom where she was an unemployed single parent in Edinburgh. While living on public assistance Rowling wrote "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" at a table in a café during her daughters naps. When "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was bought and published by Bloomsbury in 1997 her life changed dramatically, the Harry Potter series has since then won numerous awards and become a tremendous success around the world. Rowling has also written three novels for adults.
