Suddenly she saw that they were not real people. They were cards. Yes, they were cards! One of the gardeners was Five, the other was Seven, and the third gardener was Two!. "How funny!" thought Alice. "They are only cards But where are the other cards from the pack?" "You see, miss," Two said at last, "this was a mistake. We put a white rose-tree here, but the Queen doesn't like white roses. She likes only red roses. We are afraid of her. We are afraid she will cut off our heads. Everybody is afraid of her. Every minute she cries: 'Off with his head2, or 'Off with her head! So we are painting these white roses red. We hope that the Queen will not notice our mistake." At this moment Five cried out: "The Queen! The Queen!" The three gardeners at once fell down on their faces3 to the ground. Alice looked about and saw a big procession of cards not far away.
Вдруг она увидела, что это были не настоящие люди. Это были карты. Да, это были карты! Одному из садовников был пятёркой, другой семёркой, а третий Садовник двойкой!
- Как смешно!" - подумала Алиса. "Они всего лишь карты, но где же остальные карты из колоды?"
- Видите ли, мисс, - сказала наконец двойка, - это было ошибкой. Мы посадили здесь белую розу, но Королева не любит белые розы. Ей нравятся только красные розы. Мы ее боимся. Мы боится, что она отрубит нам головы. Все бояться ее. Каждую минуту она кричит: "Отрубить ему голову, или "Отрубить ей голову! Поэтому мы красим эти белые розы в красный цвет. Мы надеемся, что Королева не заметит нашей ошибки."
В этот момент пятка крикнула: "Королева! Королева!"
Трое Садовников сразу повалились лицом на землю. Алиса огляделась по сторонам и увидела неподалеку большую процессию карт.
