Let's mix starch and iodine. This is typically done in iodine water solution. What happens? The reaction creates a mixture of bright blue colour. This reaction is used to to find out if starch is present in food in any detectible proportion. In the course of the test we mix iodine and potassium iodide in water to produce a solution. At first the solution has a slightly orange-browny colour. This solution being added to a piece of food containings starch, turns dark blue. A good demonstration of the process can be performed on potatoes or bread which contain starch in great amounts.
