Alma-Ata (Kazakh. Almaty, Almaty (inf.) [6]; until 1921 - Verny) - a city of republican significance and the largest settlement of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the former capital of Kazakhstan (until 1997), the Kazakh SSR (as part of the USSR), Kazakh ASSR (as part of the RSFSR).
According to ancient monuments discovered by archaeologists in the territory of modern Almaty, it can be judged that this area has long been inhabited by nomadic and semi-settled tribes. The most characteristic monuments of this region are the Saks burial mounds of the VI — III centuries BC. e., the largest of which are up to 20 m high and with a base diameter of more than 100 m, were located on the banks of the rivers Bolshaya and Malaya Almatinok, Esentaya (Vesnovki), Aksaya. Currently, most of the mounds are buried under residential development of the city [41].
Judging by the findings of archaeologists (sickles, graters, simple irrigation systems and others), the Usun tribes who replaced the Saks were familiar with agriculture and the permanent settlements were shallow.
Subsequently, the territory of the Seven Rivers was consistently included in the West Turkic, Turgesh and Karluk Kaganates, and the state of Karakhanids. Under the Karluks in the foothill zone of the Zailiysky Alatau, settled agricultural settlements began to appear on the sites of permanent wintering (Kystau) and the city as the headquarters of the nomadic nobility.
