TOURISM AS A COMMODITY
Tourism is without doubt a valuable economic commodity able to create wealth, give employment and endow at both local and national levels. It stimulates development not only in the destination country, through the provision of employment, facilities and accommodation, but also in the country where the tourist lives through the travel and organisation of holidays. Developing of Third World countries in particular can benefit from increasing interest shown by Western visitors searching for different and more unusual holidays. Ideally, such countries will develop their tourism in such a way that it benefits directly to their own economy. Often it is those features, which cost the locals nothing – scenery, weather, landscape – which attract visitors and bring in a much-needed source of revenue. Tourists and travellers can also benefit from such development since it provides them with the chance to cross geographical and cultural borders that only twenty years ago were closed to them. As ever more distant corners of the world become accessible so we have the chance to learn more about the customs and culture of the people that share this world with us. So the theory goes, but the reality is somewhat different.
How important tourism is and its tremendous future potential is illustrated by recent statistics published by the World Tourist Organisation (WTO), the international body coordinating tourism development. They predict that the current estimate of 415 million international tourist in 1990 will continue to grow steadily by up to 5 per cent in the 1990s, and this is a conservative estimate. Such an impact will have far-reaching consequences. International tourism at this moment accounts for 6 per cent of total world exports and 15 per cent of world trade in services, and is forecast to increase by an estimated 4 per cent each year up to the year 2000, by which time it will be without doubt the world's largest export industry. Today total expenditure on domestic and international tourism represents 12 per cent of the total world Gross National Product (GNP) and it employs over 100 million people. In 1988 alone, about one and a half billion domestic and international tourist trips were made involving a third of the world's population.
