Мы используем Past Simple, так как это последовательность действий (Сначала понял, потом взял меч и покинул деревню)

2 The lonely warrior was riding his horse when he met some other men from distant places.

Мы используем Past Continuous в первом случае и Past Simple во втором, так как человек во время процесса (катание на лошади) совершил краткое действие, которое прерывало данный процесс (встречал других людей)

3 While the men was searching for happiness, it became clear that each man was thinking only about himself.

Мы используем Past Continuous в первом случае, так как глагол следует после слова-маркера while, а во втором случае - Past Simple, так как идет обозначение краткого действия во время процесса (Стало понятно что каждый думает о себе во время поиска счастья)

4 While the lonely warrior was fighting he fell and a mountain appeared in that place.
Здесь мы используем в первом случае Past Continuous, так как подразумеваем, что воин упал во время длительного процесса драки (краткое действие прерывает процесс), а во втором случае употребляем Past Simple (прерывание процесса), в третьем случае же ставим Past Simple, так как это последовательное действие, после падения воина.
