The Story of St. Valentine

He was having trouble finding enough men to join the army because the men wanted to be home with their wives and children. So Emperor Claudius II ______ (decide) to cancel all marriages. No one in Rome was allowed to get married.

A priest named Valentine did not agree with the Emperor. He _________ (believe) people should get married. He thought that if people were not married, they would be tempted by sin. So he secretly and illegally __________ (marry) couples anyway. He performed the weddings in secret places so the Roman soldiers wouldn’t find out. He was sent to prison.

Valentine was killed on the 14th or the 24th of February in the year 269 or 270. We celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th in honor of St. Valentine.
