There are 99%  of state schools and only 1 % of private schools in Russia. There are 95% of general educations schools. There are 5 % of gymnasiums and  lyceums. There are many kindergartens. Kindergartens, unlike schools, are regulated by regional and local authorities. Preparatory classes are normally within the school building.
Children begin to go to school from 6 or 7 years old. Most children work through the system of primary and secondary schools. They have to learn at the primary schools for 4 years and 5 years at secondary schools. Children take exams at the end of their primary and secondary education. At the end of their secondary education they take exams in 4 subjects. This exam system means that students specialize very early and the choice between arts and sciences has to be made at fourteen.
