The Venice Carnival is an annual fancy-dress festival that takes place in Venice in February. The first mention of the carnival in Venice dates back to 1094, although masks were not worn at the carnivals until the XIII-XIV centuries. In 1162, in honor of the victory over the Patriarch of Aquileia, a festivities began in Piazza San Marco. Presumably since that time, the carnival has become an annual. Wearing of masks was very popular for six months, from August to Lent. Venetian masks are made from leather or papier-mâché. The earliest masks were quite simple in design and were used not to hide the face, but to create distance and the ability to communicate with socially unequal. Modern masks are painted by hand, using soil and gold leaf. They are adorned with bird feathers and precious stones.

One of the most important events of the carnival is the competition for the best mask. Every year, over half a million tourists come to Venice for carnival events - including to participate in them. The carnival opens with the oldest Venetian holiday - Festa delle Marie, which is dedicated to the release of Venetian girls kidnapped by pirates from Istria.
