Task 1 Read the text carefully and mark the sentences true (T) or false (F).Imagine yourself at sea in a small boat alone. You are sailing around the world. There’s nobody you can talk to except yourself and a goat. You and the goat have little to say to each other. The goat does not behave well. He has eaten your map for breakfast, your hat for dinner. He doesn’t know what to do with himself. You want to throw him into the sea, but you are a kind and a patient person. You are also a clever sailor. You can even make your boat go by itself when you want to sleep.

A hundred years ago, Joshua Slocum, an American, decided to sail around the world by himself. He was not rich and could not build a good boat for his journey. So he found an old fishing boat in the field, bought it and rebuilt it. He used wood from an oak tree which he cut down himself. He took some food, a fishing rod and a goat with himself. He travelled for a year and reached first Australia and then Africa. He even visited Robinson Crusoe’s Island. His trip was very dangerous. He even had to defend himself against pirates three times.

Since Slocum’s time, many people have sailed round the world by themselves. The Australian May Cottee was one of the first women who sailed round the world by herself.

Today people who travel round the world have radio to entertain themselves, they have telephones, and they talk to their families. If they get into difficulties, other ships or helicopters can help them if there is a danger. But all the same sailing by yourself for months is hard. You have to do everything yourself. Only some people can do it. Is that right?
