His father is a chemical engineer, a music lover, and his mother is a gifted pianist. After studying at a private music school in 1919, Shostakovich was admitted to the Petrograd Conservatory as a piano teacher, and later began to study composition. While still a student, he began working as a taper in cinemas. Shostakovich died in 1975.
