1. We had a postcard from them two days ago. They said they were having a marvellous time. (Past Simple указывает на "краткое" действие в прошлом, а continuous - на длительное действие)

2. While she was shopping this morning (процесс), she lost her money ("быстрое" действие в прошлом). She does not know how. (не знает сейчас)

3. They are announcing our flight. We are having a problem. One of our suitcases is missing. (эти действия происходят в момент речи - present continuous)

4. Who is speaking there? - I don't know.  (действие происходит сейчас, в настоящем, но глагол know в continuous не используется)

5. He doesn't smoke (он не курит вообще - нет такой привычки = Present Simple). He isn't smoking now (не курит в данный момент). When he was at the office yesterday, he was not smoking, he was working hard. (он вчера не курил, а работал - continuous подчеркивает длительность этих действий)

6. When my sister was washing her skirt (процесс в прошлом), she found a pound note in the pocket (нашла - "быстрое" действие в прошлом).

12. She always wears nice clothes for work (регулярное действие в настоящем). Today she is wearing a nice blouse and a dark skirt (речь только о сегодняшнем дне, поэтому используем present continuous)

14. I saw my friend in the street yesterday, but he was running for a bus and he didn't have time to speak to me. (увидел друга - быстрое действие в прошлом, бежал на автобус - процесс, have в этом значении в continuous не используется)
