Oscar Wilde was born on 16 October 1854 at 21 Westland Row in Dublin and was the second child of the marriage of Sir William Wilde (1815–1876) and Jane Francesca Wilde (1821–1896). His brother William, "Willie", was two years older. Wilde's father was Ireland's leading ophthalmologist (ear and eye surgeon) and was knighted in 1864 for his service as a consultant physician and assistant commissioner for the Census of Ireland.
