Dead lake

This small reservoir - 100 meters long and 60 meters wide - is located near the Sapak village in the Almaty region and is included in the list of the most dangerous places on the planet.

For unknown reasons, the lake does not dry up even in the midst of a hot summer and the water remains icy in it. Algae do not grow in it, fish do not live, all types of aquatic insects are absent, and there are not even mosquitoes and flies on the shore.

But the lake got its name also for the reason that people drown in it almost every year. As a rule, they are newcomers who do not believe the stories of local residents. At the same time, the drowned people do not rise to the surface after a few days, as is usually the case, but stand at the bottom, erect to their full height. Even divers with a full tank of air, for unknown reasons, begin to suffocate after spending only a few minutes in the water.

According to legend, the lake acquired its deadly properties after a hundred years ago, the groom, in a fit of jealousy, drowned his bride in it right on the eve of the wedding. Since then, it has been considered cursed. According to the scientific hypothesis, the toxic gas that is released from the crevice at the bottom of the reservoir is to blame.
