Paper money appeared in Russia in 1769, when Catherine II reigned. As in ancient China, for the first time, paper money entered circulation, the main reason was an inconvenient calculation, when large sums had to be collected with copper coins. The banknotes were supposed to replace the heavy copper coin and, therefore, facilitate the transportation of money. In addition, the productivity of the silver mines did not allow for the required volumes of the silver coin. The banknotes were issued in four denominations - 100, 75, 50 and 25 rubles.
