Zenkov Cathedral, Almaty
A unique architectural structure - the Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral) is located in the picturesque Panfilov Park of Almaty. This historical monument is considered one of the main attractions of the city. The initiators of the construction of the temple were the bishops of Turkestan and Tashkent at the very beginning of the XIX century. The project was undertaken by the best engineers and architects K.A. Borisoglebsky, N.I. Stepanov, S.K. Troparevsky, and A.P. Zenkov. In 1903, the project was approved, and from 1904 to 1907, the construction of the cathedral was underway. A.P. Zenkov supervised all the works.
A distinctive feature of this wooden structure is that it was built using a unique ancient technology - practically without nails. The five-domed and three-span cathedral with an attached bell tower entered the eight tallest buildings in the world, completely built of wood.
The famous Russian talented artist and icon painter N. G. Khludov worked on the interior decoration of the temple. Dozens of holy faces decorated the interior of the cathedral. Moldings and wrought-iron ornaments made by craftsmen complemented the beauty of this holy place. Gilded domes with crosses sparkled in the sun, and the temple became visible from afar.
