1. Air pollution. Air pollution has become a serious problem in urban centers in recent years. The main sources of air pollution are energy and the construction materials sector, mining and processing industries, coal-using households, and transport. The deterioration in air quality is associated with the increased use of coal at CHP plants instead of natural gas, with the use of low-grade fuel in households and with the growth of the fleet of vehicles, which involves many old, poorly maintained cars.
2. Lack of water. The sharing of natural resources is an important problem for the countries of Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have significant water resources originating from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, which in Soviet times were shared with Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan in exchange for gas, oil and electricity.
3. Mining industry. Waste from the mining industry poses a direct threat to the environment of both Kyrgyzstan and neighboring countries.
