At school her teachers did not expect her to be good at sport but her disability did not stop her and she swam and  played basketball. Then she saw the London Marathon on TV and  decided to try athletics. At the age of fifteen she represented Wales in the Junior National Games and came first in the 100 metres. Between 1992 and 2004 she won sixteen Paralympic medals and broke 30 World records. She retired from wheelchair racing in 2007.
