When we were children, our family celebrated Christmas in a very traditional way. About a week before Christmas Eve out Mother used to do all kinds of preparations.
First, she used to start the shopping in small local shops which used to sell about everything. When all the necessary ingredients were in the larder, she used to spend all days cooking and baking in our big kitchen. My sisters and I used to hurry back home after school to be the first to scrape the bowl. And we helped Mother, too. We used to peel, cut and slice, sieve, whip and stir, but it was always Mother who used to add the final, mastery touches to every dish and cake. It was hard work, and she was a demanding boss, but it was also fun to work together. On Christmas Eve Father, usually too busy to spend much time with the children, used to take time off work and join us in the preparations. His job was to decorate the Christmas tree. We used to have huge Christmas trees, reaching up to the ceiling in our living room. Father used to store big boxes of Christmas decorations, which we used to take out from year to year - each year adding a few new items - and, to begin, he used to climb a ladder to put a silvery tinsel star on top of the tree. From that moment, the kitchen and all the goodies there used to lose all their appeal for me. I used to tiptoe to the dining room and ask Father to let me help him. The main attraction was that while working on the tree he used to sing Christmas carols.
