Facts:

1. Disney came from humble beginnings

Walt Disney, the fourth of five children, was born in Chicago on December 5, 1901, moved with his family to a farm in Marselin, Missouri, when he was four years old. It was in Marceline, the community of the small town of Disney, that he remembered that he was an adult as an idyll - he first received support for his growing interest in drawing from both his aunt and a neighbour who was a retired doctor. However, Disney's father had difficulty earning a living in Marselin and sold the farm in 1910; the following year the family moved to Kansas City. Disney's father bought a newspaper route there, and for the next six years Walt helped with delivery, working before and after school and on weekends.

2. He was the voice of Mickey Mouse.

After serving in the Red Cross, Disney moved to Kansas City, hoping to become a newspaper cartoonist. Instead, he found a job to create advertising for magazines and theatres, and then became interested in animation. In 1922, he opened a film studio called Laugh-O-Gram, but it was experiencing financial difficulties and was closed in 1923. In the same year, he moved to Hollywood and founded Disney Brothers Studio with his older brother Roy. After producing various short animated cartoons in 1927, the studio began creating a series about a character designed by Walt, called Oswald the Happy Rabbit. However, the following year, which was a serious blow, Walt lost the rights to his popular creation, and many of his employees were poachers in a corporate dispute. In response, he developed a new character, originally called Mortimer Mouse, before it was decided that Mickey would be the best nickname. Mickey Mouse officially made his debut in a 1928 short film called Willie the Parishide, one of the first cartoons ever to use synchronised sound effects.

3. Disney produced propaganda films for the U.S. government during World War II.

During the war, Disney employees created educational films for various federal agencies, including the 1942 animated short film New Spirit, commissioned by the Ministry of Finance to encourage people to pay income tax as a way to support military efforts. The film, in which Donald Duck starred, was shown in thousands of theatres and even received an Oscar nomination. Disney Studio also made educational films for the American military and created more than a thousand insignia for military units for free; the projects were focussed on famous Disney characters, as well as new characters.
