The article argues that the notion of sovereignty has always been challenged, with only a few powerful countries such as the United States having true autonomy and control. Even weaker states, whose structures have been influenced by external forces, still find sovereignty attractive as it provides international recognition, access to international organizations and finance, and status for leaders. While national borders remain a source of conflict in many parts of the world, globalization and the influence of multilateral institutions will mostly impact the scope of state authority rather than fundamentally changing how political life is organized. The article suggests that sovereignty is not dead, but rather a complex and evolving concept.
