Kyiv
Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe, so it has many historical sites. It was the capital of ancient Russia, the cradle of three fraternal peoples - Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian. Today it is a major political, industrial, scientific and cultural center of Ukraine. Its population is about 3 million people. It is the seat of the Verkhovna Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers.
Kyiv is famous not only for its history (it has been called the "mother of all Russian cities"), but also for its beauty and for the large number of historical sites. Located on the picturesque banks of the Dnipro River, Kyiv's monuments of the past attract many visitors. They are impressed by the Kyiv Pechersk Monastery, which stands on a green hill above the Dnipro River, with its shiny golden domes visible from across the capital. The huge gates from Volodymyrska Street open onto the territory of another ancient monument, St. Sophia Cathedral, which is a state architectural and historical reserve. It was founded in 1037 during the reign of Yaroslav the Wise. The Golden Gate can be seen on the other side of Volodymyrska Street. The Shevchenko Memorial, Vydubetskyi Monastery, Askold's Grave, and St. Andrew's Church are also worth seeing. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located in the Park of Immortal Glory, where an eternal flame burns over it. There are many museums in Kyiv: The Historical Museum, the Museum of Ukrainian Art, the Museum of Russian Art, the Museum of Western and Eastern Art, the Shevchenko Museum, the Lesya Ukrainka Memorial Museum, and others. Kyiv is the center of Ukrainian culture. It is home to many research institutes and higher education institutions. It is known for its theaters and concert halls, such as the Taras Shevchenko Opera and Ballet Theater, the Musical Comedy Theater, the Puppet Theater, the Conservatory and Philharmonic, and the Ukraine Concert Hall. Performances staged in these theaters are always in great demand. The picturesque green banks and hills, blissful flower beds with millions of different flowers, the beautiful beaches of the Dnipro, Khreshchatyk, one of the widest and most beautiful streets in our country - all this adds to the beauty of the Ukrainian capital.
