St Columba, also known as Columba of Iona, was an Irish abbot and missionary who lived from 521 to 597 AD. He is credited with spreading Christianity throughout Scotland and founding several monasteries, including one on the island of Iona that became a major center of Gaelic monasticism. St Columba is also known for his role in the Battle of Cul Dreimhne in 561, in which he allegedly caused the deaths of several people over a dispute about the copying of a manuscript. Despite this controversy, St Columba is venerated as a saint in both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and his feast day is celebrated on June 9.
