Rynok Square is the epicenter of the city's heartbeat. On the main square there is a modern magistrate (Lviv town hall) and the most interesting tenement houses in the center of the city. Several centuries ago, beautiful and colorful houses played the role of commercial and industrial premises and representative offices of shopkeepers of various nationalities.
The first city hall appeared in the 14th century as a result of granting the city Magdeburg law, which meant city self-government as opposed to the power of the monarch. Long-standing privileges and provision of comfortable living in the city created conditions for conducting trade and crafts for Germans, Ruthenians, Poles, Jews, Armenians and even Saracens.
Potocki Palace. This majestic palace was commissioned by the famous military and political figure of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the richest tycoons of his time, Józef Potocki. It was designed by the French architect de Vernay, built under the direction of the Pole Juliusz Cybulski, and is a wonderful example of European classicism.
