Over the centuries, the role of a knight underwent significant transformations. Initially, a knight was essentially a soldier who served the king, fought in battles, and received land as a reward. The position was a blend of military and noble responsibilities.
As time passed, the privilege of becoming a knight was reserved for specific individuals. Typically, a knight's firstborn son had the right to inherit his father's land and follow in his footsteps. Those from royalty or with titles also had the opportunity. Bravery in battle could also be a pathway to knighthood.
The journey to knighthood was a rigorous process that spanned about fourteen years. At the age of seven, a nobleman's son would become a page, assisting a knight and learning essential skills. Between the ages of fourteen and sixteen, the page would advance to become a squire, taking on more responsibilities, including caring for the knight's horse and assisting with armor.
Not every squire would ascend to knighthood; passing tests of strength and skill, along with demonstrating sufficient income, were prerequisites. Becoming a knight was an expensive endeavor, requiring multiple horses, attendants, and costly armor. Successful squires underwent a special ceremony where they were dubbed knights.
Knights were bound by a code of chivalry, pledging obedience to their lord and committing to virtues such as courage, honesty, loyalty, and strength. They were obligated to protect the vulnerable, especially women, and champion justice and fairness. Additionally, they adhered to the rules of courtly love, maintaining a distant admiration for a woman of equal or higher rank.
With the advent of gunpowder and firearms, the practicality of wearing armor diminished, and knights transitioned from the forefront of military prowess. Today, knights are largely legendary figures, although honorary knighthoods are still bestowed for notable contributions to society, such as by the Queen of England, who confers the title "Sir" in a formal ceremony.
