As I continued studying and later slept, I suddenly awoke to violent tremors. Although there had been previous earthquakes, this was more intense. Alongside my mother, we ventured outside, deciding to leave at dawn. Behind us, a black cloud with fiery flashes, resembling lightning, approached. The cloud caught up, and hot ash began to rain down, turning day into night. Terrified, we sought shelter, hearing the agonizing cries of others.

On August 26th, the cloud dissipated, bringing daylight. We were fortunate to be alive, but the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum lay buried under ash and mud from the catastrophic eruption.
