Nicholas lived in the city of Patara in Asia Minor. He was born in 280 to rich and pious parents Theophanes and Nonna. Nicholas' uncle was the bishop of Patara. The young man grew up in love and kindness, but he was deeply saddened by the surrounding poverty and squalor of the townspeople. He helped poor families and orphans as much as he could. In order not to humiliate people with charity, he would deliver food, clothes, and treats at night and leave them on the doorsteps of poor people's homes. Over time, people learned about the philanthropist and came to him openly with their troubles and problems.
