Buffalo Bill
Until the year 1860 the way from California to the United States had to go by water, and the journey took months. There was as yet no railway across the wild country between the Pacific Ocean in the west and the Mississippi River in the
In 1860 the Pony Express mail service was begun. The mail was carried by very fast riders who rode at full gallop all the way. After riding 15 or 20 miles, a rider came to a station, changed and rode on to the next station. The change took only two minutes. Each rider had to cover about one hundred miles. Then he stopped to rest and gave the mail to another rider.
The riders led very hard lives. They had to ride through storm and snow, over hills and mountains, swimming across rivers and fighting Indians and white robbers. The most famous of them was Buffalo Bill. There were few men who knew the country and could ride a horse as well as he. It was often his job to ride over the most difficult and dangerous parts of the way. Once Bill was carrying a large sum of money and thought that the robbers knew about it. He put old newspapers into his mailbag and hid the money under the saddle. On the way he was stopped by two masked men who pointed their pistols at him.
"Hold up your hands!" they shouted. "We want your mailbag." Bill began to untie the bag straight into the face of one of the robbers. Quick as a flash he rode his horse at the other man. The man fell. Bill galloped away without looking back. The robbers were too surprised at first to shoot at him. Besides, they thought they had the mailbag with the money. Bill delivered the cash safely to the next station.

Buffalo Bill became renowned during the era when the only route from California to the United States involved lengthy sea voyages until 1860. The introduction of the Pony Express marked a significant change. Swift riders covered about 100 miles each, exchanging horses at stations in a mere two minutes. Buffalo Bill, known for his exceptional horsemanship, faced perilous terrains and potential threats from both nature and humans. Once, suspecting robbers, he cleverly concealed money under his saddle, using old newspapers in the mailbag. When confronted, he outwitted the masked assailants, galloping away unscathed and successfully delivering the cash to the next station.
