In February or in March Russia celebrates Shrovetide. It is an ancient festival of the Slavonic people. They believed that the seasons change because of the struggle between Yarilo, god of the sun, and the evil spirits. And people was trying to help Yarilo fight against cold and darkness. So, for the whole week russian villagers had fun. They built a dummy made out of straw and old clothes. And on Sunday they put it on a sledge and pulled it around the villages singing and shouting. Then, at the end of the festival, they burnt it. One of the most important part of the Shrovetide week was making and eating pancakes. The hot, round pancakes symbolized Yarilo.
