У вас смешаны два времени, настоящее и прошедшее - такого быть не должно. Если вся история происходила в прошлом, то все глаголы надо ставить в прошедшее время. Если все в настоящем - то все в настоящем. Если переводить точно то, что вы написали (и перевод ниже так и сделан) - то это будет неверно.
