Curse That Scared a Thief.

 

One day Hector Bonallo (buy) a ring
for his wife Margaret while working in Australia. On the same day he (walk)
into a bar in Sydney and (fall) into conversation with two Aborigines. He (to
be) pleased with his purchase and (show) it to them. One of the strangers
(offer) to give the ring his tribal seal of protection. He (say) that anyone who
stole it would be struck with bad luck and ill health. And he (give) Mr.
Bonallo a code phrase.

Shortly afterwards he and his wife
(return) to Southport, Lancashire. Then (come) the burglary, and Mr. Bonallo
(recall) the curse. Police could do nothing, and his wife (to be) very upset.
So he (decide) to recall the curse. He (utter) the code phrase, and the local
newspaper (publish) the story of the curse. But they (hear) nothing about the
ring for two years.

Once Hector (return) home after
walking with his dog he (find) a tiny parcel on the porch mat. He (find) a gold
ring crowned with a large black opal. He (recognize) it as one of several items
of jewellery burgled from his home more than two years ago. “I (get) the shock
of my life”, said Mr. Bonallo. He (to be) pretty skeptical about the curse. But
then he (know) it (have) its effect. They never (know) what (happen) to the
thieves to make them do it. His wife (to be) amazed and delighted to have the
ring back after all this time.

reveal the curse until the ring would be stolen again
