Это не презент симпл и континиус, а паст симпл и континиус. Т.Е. Это прошедшее время!
Паст континиу используется для описания длительного действия, которое происходило в определенный момент в прошлом.
Паст симпл - обычное или регулярно повторяющиееся действие в прошлом

2.When John arrived, we were having breakfast. Когда Джон приехал, мы завтракали. т.е. он зашел домой, а они сидели за столом и ели - вот почему континиус.
