Saksaul - a genus of woody plants of the subfamily Maravani family Amaranth; earlier the family was attributed to the Marevy family. It forms desert-woody thickets - saxaul forests, the area of which in southern Kazakhstan is about 15 million hectares, in Turkmenistan - 6 million hectares, in Uzbekistan - 0.6 million hectares.Saksaul white is a large shrub 1.5–2.5 m high, and sometimes up to 5 m, growing on desert sands. Its leaves look like small scales. The food is green and growth branches. Beautiful and sometimes even the only food for camels throughout the year. Camels are able to eat up saxaul bushes up to 3 m in height and can receive up to 12 kg of fodder mass from one bush. For sheep, only dry leaves and twigs that have fallen to the ground are available (up to 1 kg from one bush). Saxaul nutritional value is high: 100.3 kg of dry food per 100 kg of dry food, and 3.7 kg of digestible protein.
White saxaul is widespread on underdeveloped soils of hilly and ridged sands, Zaissan saxaul is common on weakly and moderately saline clay, sandy, and gravelly alluvial soils.
