African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. They weigh between 2,000 and 6,000 kg (4,400 and 13,200 lb), with the largest specimens reaching 7,000 kg (15,400 lb) or more. They are slightly larger than Asian elephants, which weigh between 1,300 and 4,000 kg (2,900 and 8,800 lb). Both sexes have large tusks that grow throughout their lives. Tusks are used for digging for roots and stripping the bark off trees for food; for fighting each other during mating season; and for defense against predators such as lions. African elephants are found in sub-Saharan Africa, in countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Botswana and Zambia.
