Marc Chagall is a Russian and French painter of Jewish origin. In addition to drawing and painting, he also studied scenography and wrote poetry in Yiddish. He was born in 1887 to a Jewish family on the outskirts of Vitebsk. Marc Chagall spent a significant part of his childhood in his grandfather's house in the village of Liozno, that is 40 km from Vitebsk. In 1906, Chagall studied in St. Petersburg, at the Art School headed by Nicholas Roerich (he was admitted to this school without exams for the third year). In 1909-1911, he continued his studies at the private art school of Zvantsev. Thanks to his friends in St. Petersburg, Marc Chagall entered the circle of young intellectuals there who are passionate about art and poetry. Marc Chagall is one of the most famous representatives of the artistic avant - garde of the XX century.
