Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741) was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher, and priest. Born in Venice, he is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe.

Vivaldi was the son of a professional violinist at St. Mark's Basilica, and he himself was trained as a musician from a young age. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1703, but he later ceased to perform his priestly duties due to poor health.

Vivaldi spent much of his life as a composer and performer in Venice, where he was appointed as the maestro di violino at the Ospedale della Pietà, a charitable institution for orphaned girls. He was responsible for training the girls in music, and he composed much of his music for the orchestra of the Pietà. Vivaldi's music was known for its virtuosic violin passages, energetic rhythms, and melodic inventiveness.

In addition to his work at the Pietà, Vivaldi composed a large number of works for opera, including many that were performed in Venice during his lifetime. He also traveled extensively throughout Europe, performing for royalty and other notable figures, and he became famous for his skill as a violinist.

Despite his success as a composer and performer, Vivaldi struggled financially throughout his life. He died in poverty in Vienna in 1741, and his music fell out of favor during the classical period. However, his music has experienced a revival in popularity in the modern era, and he is now recognized as one of the greatest composers of the Baroque period.
