There are 50 states in the United States.
Two of these states, Alaska and Hawaii, are not connected to any other state. You can see them on this map. The United States is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. To the north are the Great Lakes. The United States is a large country with a rich natural environment. It stretches from the Atlantic coast to the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean and from cold, snowy northern Alaska to sunny Florida in the southeast. The United States is blessed with almost all types of weather. There are rocky coasts, dry and empty deserts, great rivers, vast plains and meadows, lakes of all sizes, high mountains, vast forests, sunny beaches, and even endless land in winter. More than 250 million people live in the United States. However, the vastness of the country leaves a lot of open space and natural scenery outside the cities. Americans have tried to preserve many of America's most beautiful natural features. There are many parks, forests and wilderness areas where you can enjoy the beauty and power of the American wilderness. The Grand Canyon, Yosemite Valley and Yellowstone are prime examples. Many rivers flow in the United States. However, the largest is the mighty Mississippi River. Native Americans call this river the "Father of Waters". The Mississippi River flows quietly through the northern part of the United States and ends about 4,000 miles (6,400 km) away in the Gulf of Mexico. On its way to the sea, the Mississippi passes through several states, growing larger and stronger, bringing water to rural areas. And the Mississippi has been an important waterway since the days when Native Americans traveled the river in canoes. Other important rivers include the Colorado and the Missouri. The Colorado River originates in the Rocky Mountains, which extend almost south from Alaska. Another important mountain range is the Appalachian Mountains to the east, which also extend from north to south. The Grand Canyon is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the United States. Its size and beauty can only be appreciated by seeing it up close. The Grand Canyon was formed by the Colorado River over millions of years. Slowly, the river cut through the hard rock. Today, the canyon is a mile deep and 200 miles long. The other side of the canyon is interesting for the variety of plants and animals that inhabit it. The south side is an arid wilderness area. The north side is covered by tall forests. The canyon is visible at different times of the day, in different seasons and under different weather conditions. At sunrise and sunset.
