The British Library in the UK has the largest number of items in the world. It was created in 1973 and its collections are based on things which were given to the British Museum (which the library was once part of) along with other things it gained. For a long time the library's books and other items were held in different buildings around London, before moving to a new building which was built especially for the library.
However, some items have since been moved to another centre in the north of England, where over seven million of the library's 174 million-plus items are kept.
