It is the third largest city in Ukraine after Kiev and Kharkiv, the main industrial, cultural, transport, scientific and resort center of the Northern Black Sea region. Odessa was founded by Catherine II in 1794, when the Russian Empress decided that the country needed a port on the Black Sea to expand ties with Europe.
