Brazilian Carnival is one of the world’s biggest festivals with millions of people celebrating it on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, Olinda, Recife, Salvador. It usually starts in February, on the Friday and ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Carnival marks the beginning of Lent, the 40-day long period before Easter.
The carnival in Rio de Janeiro is considered the biggest in the world, with around two million people celebrating it on the streets each day. Rio Carnival is famous for its samba music and for the amazing costumes and floats. In 1984, the government decided to give the carnival a special avenue, called the Sambodromo, where the Samba Parade takes place. However, there are still plenty of street parties and parades happening all over the city. The parades involve people, allegorical cars and floats. A float is a huge decorated platform on the back of a truck. Each year floats, singers, dancers and costumes show a unique theme.
The most famous Brazilian holiday is important for people because it is time for fun, freedom and almost one week without work. Celebration lasts for 4 days and 4 nights. People put on brightly coloured costumes and go out into streets. Costumes and rhythms vary from one region of Brazil to another. The parades are a kind of competition and the samba-schools are judged on their costumes, dancing, floats and music. Each school presents a different theme which usually revolves around historical happenings or some sort of cultural or political movement. Some samba-schools spend millions of dollars on their preparations, but it is estimated that carnival makes over $40 million from ticket sales and advertising. For example, Rio de Janeiro's carnival alone drew 4.9 million people in 2011, including 400 000 foreigners.
